For most families the best Bahamas resort is a specific tower at Atlantis rather than “Atlantis” as a whole — The Coral if you want the family price, The Reef if you want a kitchen — with Grand Hyatt Baha Mar as the calmer, better-value alternative on Cable Beach. Everything else on this list is a deliberate move away from Nassau: Exuma, Andros and Harbour Island trade water parks for water. Atlantis is four different hotels — pick the right one
This is the single most common Bahamas booking mistake. Atlantis is a complex of separate accommodations sharing one enormous water park, Aquaventure, and one set of pools and beaches. They differ enormously in price and in what your room contains.
1. The Coral at Atlantis — Best for: families who want Aquaventure at the sanest rate · Mid-to-splurge. The family-leaning tower: straightforward rooms, its own pool area, full access to everything. This is the default answer for a family of four. Caveat: rooms are standard hotel rooms — no separating a toddler’s bedtime from your evening.
2. The Reef at Atlantis — Best for: families who need a kitchen · Splurge. Residential-style studios and suites with kitchenettes or full kitchens, which with a baby on bottles or a fussy four-year-old is worth the premium on its own. Caveat: it sits at the quieter edge of the property, so factor in the walk with a stroller.
3. The Royal at Atlantis — Best for: kids who want to be inside the spectacle · Splurge. The iconic twin towers over the aquarium lobby, in the middle of everything. Small children find the fish tanks genuinely mesmerising. Caveat: central means loud, and the rate reflects the postcard.
4. Harborside Resort at Atlantis — Best for: multi-family groups · Mid-to-splurge. Villa-style units by the marina with full kitchens and separate bedrooms, a short walk or shuttle from the parks. Caveat: it’s timeshare-style inventory, so unit condition varies more than in a hotel tower.
A note on the Atlantis bill: your room rate covers Aquaventure, but plenty of the marquee experiences — dolphin encounters, cabanas, some restaurants — are extra, and the daily resort charge is on top. Budget as if the room is roughly two-thirds of the trip cost.
Cable Beach: the Baha Mar alternative
5. Grand Hyatt Baha Mar — Best for: better beach, calmer resort, similar orbit · Splurge. Six outdoor pools, a long sheltered stretch of Cable Beach, a kids club, and the Baha Bay water park next door (ticketed separately — check what your rate includes). The Out Islands: quiet water instead of water parks
If your children are happy with a beach and a boat, the Out Islands are a different and, to my mind, better Bahamas. All of them require a second flight or a ferry from Nassau, which is the real trade.
7. Grand Isle Resort & Residences, Great Exuma — Best for: a villa week with a kitchen · Splurge. Full villas above a quiet beach ten minutes from Exuma’s airport, with space to spread out and cook — the format that makes a week with a baby genuinely restful. Caveat: you’ll want a rental car and there’s little on-site entertainment.
8. Small Hope Bay Lodge, Andros — Best for: an unplugged, all-inclusive family week · Mid. A long-running family-run all-inclusive on Andros with beach cabins, home cooking, snorkeling and diving, and no televisions. Its guest ratings are among the highest in the country. Caveat: it is rustic by design — if your family’s idea of a holiday involves a water slide, this is the wrong island entirely.
