Best Christmas Vacations for Families: Snow, Lights, Santa

For a properly festive Christmas vacation with kids, my top picks are Rovaniemi in Finnish Lapland, the Bavarian-style village of Leavenworth in Washington, the Polar Express train from Williams, Arizona, Walt Disney World’s holiday season, and Nuremberg’s Christmas market in Germany. Each one delivers something specific: real snow, a town covered in lights, a Santa meeting worth the trip, or all three. This list is the snowy, twinkly half of December. If you want sun instead, that is a different trip, and I cover it below in one paragraph. Dates for 2026 are given wherever the organizers have published them, so you can book before the good rooms go.

First: festive or warm?

These are two different Christmas trips, and mixing them is how families end up disappointed. A beach resort with a tree in the lobby is a warm trip. A Bavarian village in the snow is a festive one.

If you want warmth, read my where to go in December with kids list instead. It covers the warm islands, Hawaii and Mexico, and it names the best Christmas-week pick for sun.

Everything below is the cold, cozy, lights-and-Santa kind.

The best Christmas vacations for families

1. Rovaniemi, Finnish Lapland: Santa’s official hometown

This is the big one for children who still believe. Santa Claus Village sits on the Arctic Circle just outside Rovaniemi, and its own site says it is open every day of the year. In December, its Christmas House Santa Claus is open daily from 9:00 to 20:00, with longer hours on December 24 and 25. Husky rides run in the village through the winter.

The easiest base with small children is inside the village itself. Santa Claus Holiday Village has heated cabins with private saunas and kitchenettes, a short walk from Santa.

The catch: it is far, cold and dark. This is a long-haul trip from the US, the days are very short in December, and you will need serious winter clothing for everyone. It is best for ages four to nine, the years when the Santa meeting means the most.

2. Leavenworth, Washington: a Bavarian village in lights

Leavenworth’s Village of Lights is the closest thing in the US to a European Christmas town. The town says it glows with over half a million lights from 6 AM to 11 PM daily, from Thanksgiving through February, and that the lights are free to enjoy. Its 2026 Christmastown festivities run from November 27 to December 24, with concerts and gazebo music.

It is about a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Seattle, so it works as a long weekend. The town itself notes that January and February are quieter, which is worth knowing if you have a toddler who does not do crowds.

The catch: December weekends are very busy and parking fills early. Go midweek if you can, and book lodging months ahead.

3. Williams, Arizona: the Polar Express

The Grand Canyon Railway runs its Polar Express from Williams to “the North Pole,” where Santa and his reindeer are waiting. The railway says the ride lasts a little over an hour, with trains leaving each night at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and that it is dark for every departure, so the lights are always on. Hot chocolate and cookies are served while the story is read.

Stay at the Grand Canyon Railway Hotel, which sits next to the Williams depot and has an indoor pool. Take the 5:30 train with under-fives so bedtime survives. Add a day at the Grand Canyon’s South Rim, about an hour north, and you have a full winter trip.

The catch: Williams is at elevation and it can snow. That is part of the magic, but drive carefully and check the forecast.

4. Walt Disney World, Florida: Christmas at full volume

Disney says its holiday season runs from November 13 to January 6, with decorations through the parks, a Frozen holiday show at Cinderella Castle, a festive Jingle Cruise, and holiday projections on the Hollywood Tower Hotel. Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party runs on select nights from November 8 to December 22, 2026, and is a separate event.

It is not snowy, but for ages three to eight it may be the most festive place on this list.

The catch: Christmas week itself is one of the busiest weeks of the year. Go in the first two weeks of December if your children are not yet in school.

5. Nashville: Christmas at Gaylord Opryland

Gaylord Opryland’s A Country Christmas runs from November 6, 2026 to January 2, 2027. The headline is ice!, a hall of colossal colored ice sculptures that this year features scenes from “Home Alone”. There is also ice tubing and a holiday cirque show. Because the resort is under glass, a toddler can do all of it in a sweater.

The catch: it is busy and it is a resort-scale crowd. Book your ice! time slot when you book your room.

6. Branson, Missouri: two months of Christmas

Branson’s tourism board says its holiday celebrations run from November 1 through January 7, with live Christmas shows, lights and Silver Dollar City’s Christmas season. It is a drive-to trip for much of the Midwest and South, and the shows are built for multi-generational families.

The catch: it is a show town. Pick two or three shows that start early and fill the rest of the time with lights and walks.

7. Breckenridge, Colorado: a ski town at Christmas

For snow you can actually play in, a Colorado ski town is the answer. Breckenridge’s 2026 calendar lists its Lighting of the Breckenridge Tree, Race of the Santas and Dog Parade on December 5, and Vail Resorts plans to open Breckenridge’s slopes on November 6. Add a few days of ski school, sledding and hot chocolate in a Victorian main street.

My best family ski resorts list covers which mountains have the best ski schools and when to book them. Christmas week sells out first.

The catch: altitude. Breckenridge is high, and the first night there can be rough for small children. Keep day one gentle.

8. San Antonio: the River Walk in lights

San Antonio’s River Walk holiday lights run from the day after Thanksgiving to early January, and they are free. A barge ride under the lit cypress trees is lovely at any age, and the weather is usually mild enough for a stroller evening. It is the easiest festive trip on this list for families in the South.

The catch: the lights are the event, and they are an evening thing. Plan daytime around the Alamo, the zoo or a Hill Country resort.

9. Nuremberg, Germany: the classic Christmas market

The Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt calls itself one of the oldest and most famous Christmas Markets in the world. The 2026 market runs from November 27 to December 24, Monday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., with wooden booths selling handmade decorations, gingerbread and Spekulatius cookies, and its website has a section just for children.

It is the anchor for a German Christmas-market trip by train, with a different market in every city. With kids, two or three markets is plenty.

The catch: the markets close on December 24, so this is an early-December trip, not a Christmas Day one. Go early in the evening, before the crowds peak.

10. New York City: windows, trees and skating

New York at Christmas is the classic city version: the big tree, the department store windows, ice skating and lights everywhere. It is wonderful with kids aged five and up. With toddlers, aim for weekday mornings and accept that the most famous spots are crowded after dark. My NYC with kids guide covers where to stay and how to pace the city.

The catch: the famous sights are shoulder-to-shoulder in the evenings closest to Christmas. Go early in December and early in the day.

How to plan a Christmas trip with small children

Book in October. Every pick on this list has a limited supply of family rooms and timed tickets, and Christmas week goes first.

Choose early December if you can. Before school breaks start, every one of these places is calmer, and often cheaper. With preschoolers, the first two weeks of December are the sweet spot.

Plan the evenings. Lights are an after-dark event, and in December dark comes early. That is good news for small children: you can see the lights at 5 p.m. and still make bedtime. Then make the hotel room the cozy part of the trip. Betteroo’s list of Christmas movies picked by age is handy for a quiet night in after a big day.

Pack for standing still. Markets, parades and light walks mean standing in the cold, which is colder than skiing or sledding. Hats, gloves and an extra layer for everyone, including the baby in the stroller.
