Best Thanksgiving Vacations With Kids: 12 Easy Trips
The best Thanksgiving vacations with kids are short and close: a parade city like New York or Philadelphia, a holiday-lights weekend in Nashville or San Antonio, a drive-to national park like the Great Smoky Mountains, or a mild, short-flight trip to San Diego or Orlando. Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26, in 2026, so most families have four or five days, not a week. That rules out long-haul flights and big time-zone changes for most of us. Below are twelve trips that fit a Wednesday-to-Sunday break, grouped by what kind of long weekend you want, each with its Thanksgiving catch.
How to pick a Thanksgiving trip
Three questions do most of the work.
Drive or fly? The days either side of Thanksgiving are some of the heaviest travel days of the year, on the roads and at airports. A trip you can drive in five or six hours avoids the airport entirely and lets you leave when the kids are ready, not when the gate opens. If you fly, a short nonstop beats a cheaper connection every time this week.
Parade, lights or quiet? Parade cities give you one huge, early, cold morning. Holiday-lights trips are evening-heavy and festive, because many cities switch their lights on that weekend. National parks are the opposite: quiet, cheap and outdoors, with Thanksgiving dinner more or less up to you.
Who cooks? Decide this before you pick a place. A rental with a kitchen means you can still do turkey your way. A hotel means booking a Thanksgiving dinner out, and the good family seatings go early.
Parade cities
1. New York City: the Macy’s parade
This is the big one. NYC Tourism lists the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade for Nov 26, 2026, and notes that this year is the parade’s 100th anniversary. The route runs from Central Park West at West 77th Street down to Herald Square, finishing with Santa.
With small children, the Upper West Side end of the route is the one to aim for. It is closer to the start, so the balloons reach you earlier, and you are a short walk from Central Park and the Natural History Museum for the rest of the day. The Hotel Beacon on the Upper West Side puts you close to the route, with kitchenettes for the early breakfast. My NYC with kids guide covers the rest of a long weekend.
The Thanksgiving catch: it is an early, cold, standing-room morning. Curbside spots go hours before the start, and with a toddler you will want a plan for the bathroom and a way out of the crowd. Treat the parade as one morning, then let the afternoon be slow.
2. Philadelphia: the oldest parade
Philadelphia calls its 6abc Dunkin’ Thanksgiving Day Parade the oldest Thanksgiving Day Parade. The city’s notice for the 2025 parade ran it from 8:30 a.m. to noon through Center City and up the Ben Franklin Parkway to the Philadelphia Art Museum, free and open to the public. Expect a similar shape in 2026, and check the city’s notice for this year’s road closures in November.
It is the gentler alternative to New York: a smaller crowd, easier hotel prices, and a city where the rest of the weekend is short walks between history and good food. The Liberty Bell and Independence Hall are a manageable morning even with a four-year-old.
The Thanksgiving catch: it is still a cold, outdoor, early start. Dress everyone for standing still, not walking.
3. Plymouth and Boston: where the story starts
For a history-minded long weekend, Plymouth is the obvious pick. Its America’s Hometown Thanksgiving Celebration and parade is set for November 21, 2026, the Saturday before Thanksgiving, so it works for families who travel the weekend before. Plimoth Patuxet Museums is open for its 2026 season through the Sunday following Thanksgiving Day, seven days a week, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The museum also runs Thanksgiving dining programs it describes as immensely popular, so book well ahead if you want dinner there.
Base yourself in Boston and day-trip down. The Omni Boston Hotel at the Seaport has a rooftop pool and an easy run out of the city.
The Thanksgiving catch: late November in New England is cold and gets dark early. Plan the outdoor living-history sites for the morning.
4. Washington, DC: free museums on a long weekend
Every Smithsonian museum is free, which makes DC one of the best-value long weekends in the country. Pick one museum a day by your children’s ages and fill the rest with the monuments and the zoo. The Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill is walkable to the Mall.
The Thanksgiving catch: check each museum’s holiday hours for Thursday itself before you build a plan around it, and book any timed passes early. The Friday after is busy.
Holiday-lights weekends
5. Nashville: Christmas at Gaylord Opryland
Gaylord Opryland runs its A Country Christmas season from November 6, 2026 to January 2, 2027, so it is in full swing over Thanksgiving. The signature attraction is ice!, a hall of colossal, colored ice sculptures, which this year features scenes from “Home Alone”. There are also ice tubing lanes and a holiday cirque show. Staying at the Gaylord Opryland itself means indoor everything, which is the point with a toddler in November.
The Thanksgiving catch: it is a resort-sized crowd, and ice! is a timed, cold, indoor walk. Bring gloves and a hat even though you are inside.
6. San Antonio: the River Walk lights
San Antonio’s River Walk holiday lights run from the day after Thanksgiving to early January, and they are free. A river barge ride under the lit cypress trees is a perfect evening at any age. South Texas is usually milder than most of the country in late November, too. The Hyatt Regency San Antonio Riverwalk opens straight onto the river, which matters when a tired child needs to be back in the room in five minutes.
The Thanksgiving catch: the lights start Friday, not Thursday. Arrive Wednesday, keep Thursday quiet, and save the River Walk for Friday and Saturday evenings.
Drive-to national parks
7. Great Smoky Mountains
The Smokies are a day’s drive from much of the East and Midwest, and the National Park Service says it is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The easiest park day with kids is Cades Cove, where an 11-mile one-way loop road circles a valley of old homesteads, churches and wildlife. The park says to allow at least two to four hours.
A cabin rental in the foothills is the Thanksgiving play here. You cook, the kids run around outside, and nobody needs a reservation for anything.
The Thanksgiving catch: the NPS weather page says that by November the lows are usually near freezing, and snow is possible at higher elevations. Pack layers, and check road conditions before driving up high.
8. Grand Canyon’s South Rim
The South Rim is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, while the North Rim closes for the winter. Late November is outside the busy spring, summer and fall-weekend rush the park warns about, so the viewpoints along the rim are calmer. It pairs well with a drive from Phoenix or Las Vegas. The Holiday Inn Resort The Squire at Grand Canyon in Tusayan sits just outside the south entrance, with an indoor pool, a bowling alley and an arcade for the evening.
The Thanksgiving catch: the park says winter storms can bring snow-covered roads and temporary closures. Keep the rim railings in mind with small children, too, and stick to the paved rim trail.
Mild weather, short flights
9. San Diego
The easiest mild-weather Thanksgiving in the continental US for families in the West. It will not be swimsuit weather, but it is usually pleasant for the zoo, the parks and the beach in a sweater. Paradise Point Resort & Spa on Mission Bay has low-rise rooms on their own island and five pools, and SeaWorld is close by.
The Thanksgiving catch: the ocean is cold. Treat it as a park-and-zoo trip with beach walks, not a beach trip.
10. Orlando
Walt Disney World’s holiday season runs from November 13 to January 6, so the parks are already dressed for Christmas by Thanksgiving week, and the weather is usually mild. It is a strong pick for kids aged three to eight. If you have more time and want somewhere truly warm later in the season, my where to go in December with kids list is built for that. Universal’s Cabana Bay Beach Resort is a good-value family base on the Universal side.
The Thanksgiving catch: this is a busy week in the parks. Plan fewer park days than you think, and book any dining reservations as early as the parks allow.
Snow and indoor water parks
11. A Colorado ski opener
Thanksgiving is the start of ski season in Colorado. Vail Resorts’ published plan for 2026-27 puts Keystone open as soon as possible in October, Breckenridge on November 6, Vail on November 13 and Beaver Creek on November 25, all subject to snow conditions. Keystone is the earliest of those openers and a classic family mountain; the Keystone Lodge & Spa is the base I would look at first.
For a first ski weekend with kids, Thanksgiving can be a gentle start: a couple of lessons and some sledding, with no week-long commitment. My best family ski resorts list covers where to book a full ski week later in the winter.
The Thanksgiving catch: early-season terrain is limited and depends on snow. Book something refundable, and do not promise anyone a full mountain.
12. An indoor water-park lodge
When the weather is unpredictable and the kids are under eight, an indoor water-park resort is the stress-free answer. Great Wolf Lodge Grapevine, near Dallas-Fort Worth airport, includes water-park access with the room. You never have to go outside, and a two- or three-night stay is plenty.
The Thanksgiving catch: it is a holiday crowd. Ask about Thanksgiving Day dining when you book, rather than assuming the restaurants will have room.

Getting there with your sanity intact
If you are driving, leave early on Tuesday or Wednesday morning rather than late on Wednesday afternoon, and come home on Saturday rather than Sunday if you can. The drive itself is easier with a plan for the back seat. Betteroo’s list of clean jokes to read out on the drive buys a surprising number of miles with five- to eight-year-olds.
Then keep Thursday light. Whatever trip you pick, the day itself is usually best spent close to the hotel or rental, with one outing and dinner. The holiday-lights events and the busiest attractions tend to fill Friday and Saturday.
For trip ideas at other times of the year, my best places to travel with kids list is sorted by age.
