Kauai With Kids: Calm-Water Beaches and Easy Days

Kauai with kids is the slow, green Hawaii trip: a small island with calm, protected swimming spots on the south and east shores, waterfalls and gardens, and very little to do at night. For young children, base yourselves in Poipu on the south shore, where a breakwater makes a sheltered swimming area, and use Lydgate’s rock-walled pools on the east side as your second beach. The north shore around Hanalei is beautiful but more exposed. One thing is different this autumn: after the 2026 hurricanes, many of Kauai’s state parks were still closed in mid-October, so check before you plan a day around one. Here’s how to choose a base, which beaches suit which ages, and the things to do with kids in Kauai that work right now.

First: what’s open after the storms

Kauai’s state parks were hit hard by Hurricanes Nolo and Lowell in 2026. The Hawaii state parks division’s notice of October 13, 2026 said:

  • Hāʻena State Park (Kēʻē Beach and the start of the Kalalau Trail) was reopening on October 15.
  • Wailua River State Park had partly reopened, with river and landing access. Hiking beyond the trailhead and access to Secret Falls (Uluwehi) were still closed, and individual kayakers couldn’t go to Fern Grotto.
  • Kōkeʻe Road was closed until further notice, all camping on Kauai was closed, and all other Kauai state parks were still closed.

That includes the Waimea Canyon lookouts, usually the island’s most famous drive. Check the notices again the week you travel. If the canyon is still closed, the rest of this guide works without it.

Poipu, the east side or Hanalei?

Poipu (south shore) is the family base. It’s usually the sunniest side, has the calmest beach for small children, and has the most resorts and condos. Most of the beach days below are within a short drive.

The east side (Wailua and Kapaʻa) is the middle of the island, close to Līhuʻe airport. It’s the value base, with more condos and casual food, and it has Lydgate. It’s also the easiest base for getting to both the south and north shores.

The north shore (Hanalei and Princeville) is the scenery: the bay, the mountains, taro fields. It’s the wettest side and the water is more exposed. With older kids it’s magical. With toddlers, I’d make it a day trip or the second half of a two-base stay.

Beaches by age

Conditions change daily and the hazards differ by beach, so check the live rating on Hawaii Beach Safety and swim near a lifeguard.

Under five: Poipu Beach Park. Poʻipū Beach is the toddler beach. A small boulder breakwater forms a protected swimming area in front of the beach park. In the middle of the beach, a sandbar joins a rocky islet to the shore at low tide (Nukumoi Point). It has showers, restrooms, picnic areas and a snack shack, and restaurants are nearby. Hawaii Beach Safety still lists strong currents, sharp coral, jellyfish and sharks among its hazards. Keep little ones inside the protected area.

Under five, east side: Lydgate Beach Park. At Lydgate, near the mouth of the Wailua River, a lava-rock wall protects the water from the open ocean. The state tourism site calls it “ideal for keiki (children) and beginner snorkelers”, and it has a lifeguard, restrooms and showers.

Three and up: Salt Pond Beach Park. On the west side near Hanapēpē, Salt Pond has a natural rock ridge that creates a large saltwater pool between the beach and the reef. It has a playground, restrooms, showers and picnic pavilions. Surf can build on the reef beyond the ridge, so keep children inside the pool.

Older kids: Hanalei Bay. Hanalei is two miles of white sand under the mountains and one of the most beautiful beaches anywhere. It’s also more exposed. Hawaii Beach Safety lists large waves, rip currents and strong currents among its hazards. On a calm day, with a lifeguard, it’s wonderful for confident swimmers. On a big-surf day, it’s a beach for building sandcastles and watching the waves.

For the water: kids’ swim goggles like the Speedo Skoogle (ages 3 to 8) are an easy first step to snorkeling in the calm spots, and a mineral sunscreen such as Blue Lizard Baby covers the rest.

Things to do with kids in Kauai

Kīlauea Point National Wildlife Refuge. On the north shore, the lighthouse point is home to one of the largest red-footed booby colonies in the world. Kids love the birds. It’s a five-minute walk on a paved path from the parking lot, which makes it easy with a stroller. The refuge opens Wednesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and you need to arrive before 3:30. Adults 16 and over need a reservation on Recreation.gov. In October 2026 entry was $11 per adult including the reservation fee. You can’t walk in, so you have to arrive by car or bike.

Hāʻena and Kēʻē Beach (now reopened). At the end of the road on the north shore, Hāʻena State Park has Kēʻē Beach, restored taro fields and the start of the Kalalau Trail. It has daily visitor limits. Non-residents must reserve before they arrive: entry is $5 per person (children 3 and under free), plus $10 for parking if you drive in. With small children, Kēʻē is the goal. The Kalalau Trail is not a family walk.

The Wailua River. The river is partly open again for boats and landing access. Check the notices before you book a tour, because Fern Grotto and Secret Falls were still off limits in mid-October.

A beach-and-lunch day in Poipu or Kapaʻa. On an island this relaxed, a slow day is part of the plan, not a wasted one. Children who are tired from the time change are happiest with a morning beach and an afternoon nap.

Where to stay

Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa (Poipu). Best for: a resort with its own lagoon · Splurge. A saltwater lagoon, a river pool and big gardens, close to Poipu’s protected beaches. It’s on my Hawaii family resorts list for exactly that combination.

Koloa Landing Resort (Poipu). Best for: space and a kitchen · Mid-to-splurge. Villa-style units with kitchens, so breakfast and naps happen in your own space.

Hilton Garden Inn Kauai Wailua Bay (east side). Best for: value near Lydgate · Mid. Oceanfront next to the Wailua River, close to Lydgate and the airport. Check the resort and parking fees before you compare it with a condo.

The Westin Princeville Ocean Resort Villas (north shore). Best for: the north shore with older kids · Splurge. Villa-style rooms and a pool for kids. Choose it for the second half of a two-base trip.

Getting around and timing

Kauai is small, but there is no road around the whole island, and the north shore road ends at Hāʻena. Rent a car, ideally with car seats booked ahead, and give each part of the island its own day. Līhuʻe is the main airport, on the east side.

Expect the time change to wake young children very early for the first few days. Use it: the beaches are empty early. For the other islands, Maui with kids is the classic resort-beach trip, Oahu with kids is the easiest first visit, and the Big Island with kids is the one for volcanoes.

FAQ: Kauai with kids

Is Kauai good for toddlers?

Yes, if you stay on the south or east side. Poipu Beach Park has a breakwater-protected swimming area and Lydgate has rock-walled pools. Both have lifeguards, and both are much calmer than the north shore beaches.

What is the calmest beach on Kauai for kids?

Poipu Beach Park’s protected swimming area and Lydgate Beach Park’s rock-walled pools are the usual picks for young children. Salt Pond, on the west side, has a large natural saltwater pool behind a rock ridge. Always check the day’s hazard rating first.

What are the best things to do with kids in Kauai?

Calm-water beaches in Poipu and at Lydgate, the seabirds at Kīlauea Point National Wildlife Refuge, Kēʻē Beach at Hāʻena State Park (book ahead), and a river trip on the Wailua. Check the state park notices first, because several parks were still closed in October 2026.

Is Waimea Canyon open?

It was not in mid-October 2026. The state’s notice said Kōkeʻe Road was closed until further notice and that Kauai state parks other than Hāʻena and part of Wailua River were still closed after the hurricanes. Check the state parks notices for the latest.

Where should families stay on Kauai?

Poipu for young children, because the calmest beaches are there and so are most of the resorts. The east side is the value option close to the airport, and Princeville on the north shore suits older kids as a second base.
